The author of “Gesture and Speech” proposed the influential idea of the parallel evolution and mutual determination of manual gestures along the symbolic capacity that for a long time seemed to define the human. Technique and speech. Language and the hand. I recall here two moments in which Leroi-Gourhan’s work refers directly to hands and which, each for a reason, produce in me an almost sentimental affect.
