El Valor de la Mirada

Bringing together a selection of consumer objects under a new light, this exhibition operates through recontextualization: moving between the everyday and the exclusive, function and perception. Emerging artist Jean-C presents "El Valor de la Mirada" (The Value of the Gaze), a show where the protagonists are not oils or marbles, but representations of mass-consumption products that question the boundaries of contemporary art and the art market. Across the exhibition, value is never treated as a fixed or autonomous quality of the objects. Instead, it is explored as a social construct of perception and context. Through the display of everyday items, the identity of a ketchup bottle, a razor blade, or a bag of potato chips, the exhibition raises a fundamental question: what truly determines the value of things? These objects are not ends in themselves, but starting points for reflection, condensing a vast history of human processes that society takes for granted. Jean-C approaches artistic practice from a conceptual perspective, where execution fades into the background. For him, creativity does not reside in the physical object or the brushstroke, but in the context and the reflection generated behind the viewer's gaze. The artist uses the exhibition space to revalue known reality, transforming the audience's point of view by forcing them to look anew at the ordinary, operating, in his own words, "like a photographer who hands over their camera to force the audience to take the photo." This show proposes an expanded field of meaning where the object remains unaltered, but the attendee redefines it completely. The exhibition also incorporates an auction mechanic that creates tension around this premise: the public will be able to bid on the pieces starting at the retail price corresponding to the actual mass-consumption object. Thus, the artwork is positioned as a space of tension that questions how far the gaze is willing to elevate that value.
